Tycjan Knut Poland, b. 1985

Overview

"Tycjan Knut's abstract works explore the interplay of color, tone, and structure, creating compositions that unfold gradually through layered, intuitive processes."

Tycjan Knut (b. 1985, Warsaw) is a London-based Polish artist whose practice focuses on abstract painting and drawing. His work is characterized by subtle tonal shifts, layered compositions, and a refined color palette that echoes the traditions of 20th-century geometric abstraction. Eschewing preparatory sketches, Knut's intuitive approach allows each painting to evolve organically. Influenced by lesser-known abstract artists of the 1960s and 1970s, Knut reinterprets this legacy with a contemporary sensibility. His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo shows in London, Los Angeles, Warsaw, and Florence, and is part of private and institutional collections worldwide.

Biography

"In painting, I try to completely rely on intuition because it, in its essence, seems to me the purest. To cultivate this quality in my works, I give up the preparations."

Tycjan Knut (b. 1985, Warsaw) is a Polish artist known for his nuanced and refined abstract paintings. After graduating from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 2011, where he studied under Prof. Jarosław Modzelewski, Knut pursued a Ph.D. at the Jan Kochanowski University Institute of Fine Arts in Kielce. Currently based in London, Knut's work has garnered international recognition for its balance of intuitive process and formal precision.

Knut's practice is defined by delicate tonal shifts and overlapping layers of color, which he builds intuitively without preparatory sketches. His minimalist yet complex compositions often explore the relationship between color, space, and structure, evoking a sense of depth that draws viewers into prolonged contemplation. The organic quality of his work reflects a dialogue with nature, with gradients and forms emerging through a process of layering and refinement.

Strongly influenced by 20th-century geometric abstraction, particularly the overlooked masters of the 1960s and 1970s, Knut reinterprets these traditions through a contemporary lens. His work balances the formal rigor of modernist abstraction with an intuitive, process-driven approach, allowing each piece to evolve naturally over time.

Knut's paintings have been exhibited in prominent galleries worldwide, with solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, London, Warsaw, and Florence. His works are part of significant collections, including those of PKO Bank and the Contemporary Art Centre El, as well as private collections in the UK, USA, Switzerland, Dubai, China, and Monaco. Through his thoughtful and contemplative practice, Knut continues to push the boundaries of abstraction, offering a fresh perspective on the interplay of structure and spontaneity in contemporary art.
