Locked by Water II was painted en plein air in the arid landscapes of southern Spain, where Nils Verkaeren immersed himself in the optical tension between drought and light. Working with a dense, tactile surface, the artist registers the scorched terrain and burning sky as a charged interplay of pigment and pressure. The gesture is at once luminous and brutal, recalling a vanishing ecology rendered unstable by human impact. Part of the Locked by Water series, the work stands as a painterly fragment of environmental memory—both grounded and disoriented.
