Locked by Water I was painted during a residency in the Almería region of southern Spain — a parched, windswept terrain where survival is written into the landscape. Marked by expressive impasto and tonal contrasts, the painting captures arid vegetation such as cacti and desert flora, transfigured through Verkaeren’s immersive plein air method. Rather than offering a traditional view, the canvas becomes a zone of encounter — where observation, memory, and the sun-scorched silence of the South collide.
