Painted during a residency in the arid landscapes of southern Spain — specifically in the Almería region — Locked by Water I marks a pivotal moment in Nils Verkaeren’s plein air practice. The work captures the tension between isolation and resilience, with scorched vegetation and cacti emerging from a dense, tactile surface. Rather than depicting the landscape, Verkaeren allows it to act upon the canvas. The result is both harsh and luminous: a record of heat, light, and stillness in a place where nature imposes itself through silence.
