In Young athlete with hairband, Tomballe revisits the classical head—an iconic motif in Greco-Roman sculpture—through a process of abstraction and affect. The youthful subject, marked by the circular hairband motif, nods to athletic statuary such as the ephebos, yet the facial compression and minimal carving destabilize the traditional canon. Here, the head is no longer a likeness but a form shaped by memory, pressure, and reduction. The result is a portrait that sits between archaic reference and psychological proximity—restrained yet emotive.
