'TRANSIENCE' at Art Rotterdam 2025, a compelling exploration into the fleeting nature of existence through the art of Tom Van Puyvelde. This exhibition expands upon themes from his inaugural show at Buysse Gallery, delving deeper into the concept of evanescence-capturing moments that suggest a quick vanishing and an airy or fragile quality.
The solo presentation spans three walls, offering a chronological journey from left to right. The left wall presents painterly research that lays the groundwork for the central triptych, which commands the middle wall, demanding spatial contemplation to be fully appreciated. This main piece interrogates the potential of figuration, derived from photographic sources, to distill fundamental elements of form, color, and light.
On the right, the 'Residu Composition' series continues, where monochromatic fields act as diary entries-each a record of leftover paint blended during the cleanup of the artist's palette. These works emphasize the routine of repetition, capturing the mundane yet profound moments of the artistic process.
'TRANSIENCE' invites viewers to question the visible and invisible borders within art, probing the divide between figuration and abstraction, and contemplating paintings not just as visual windows but as tangible, sculptural presences.
