NILS VERKAEREN - TIDAL FLUX
Buysse Gallery is pleased to present Tidal Flux, a solo exhibition by Nils Verkaeren (BE, °1980), marking his first major presentation at the gallery. The exhibition brings together a new series of plein air paintings developed in response to the tidal landscapes of the Zwin, where water, light, and shifting biotopes continuously reshape the environment.
Verkaeren's practice resists static representation. His work emerges from direct engagement with landscape, where time and process become embedded in the surface of the painting. In Tidal Flux, the dynamics of ebb and flow-both in nature and in paint-are at the core of his investigation. This exhibition expands on Verkaeren's long-standing interest in how landscape painting can register change, impermanence, and movement rather than merely depict a fixed scene.
Live Painting Performances
Alongside the exhibition, two live plein air painting performances will take place, bringing Verkaeren's process into direct conversation with the audience. These performances are synchronized with the natural cycles of high and low tide, reinforcing the exhibition's themes of flux, transformation, and presence.

May 10, 2025 - One day before Mother's Day
During these moments, Verkaeren will paint in real time, responding to the immediate conditions of light, weather, and landscape. The audience is invited to witness the act of painting as an open-ended process, rather than a completed image.
