Nils Verkaeren Belgium, b. 1980

Nils Verkaeren (b. 1980, Antwerp) works within the tradition of plein air painting, yet his approach extends beyond observation to a physical and immersive engagement with the landscape. His practice is shaped by movement-traversing remote environments, adjusting to shifting light, wind, and terrain. His paintings, executed on large-scale canvases and wooden panels, seek to capture the impermanence of place, where the elements are as much collaborators as subjects. Educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Verkaeren has exhibited internationally, including in Belgium, Colombia, France, and Mexico. His work interrogates the limits of representation, embracing the instability of perception and the contingencies of site.
