Buysse Gallery is pleased to present Die schöne Jugend, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Armin Boehm, on view from 1 August to 27 September 2026 at Buysse Gallery, Knokke. Bringing together works in oil, textile and mixed media, the exhibition considers how painting constructs its own reality through a continuously evolving pictorial language.
Over the past decades, Armin Boehm has developed a distinctive painterly vocabulary in which distorted physiognomies, theatrical figures and layered compositions occupy a central position. In his recent work, this language expands without abandoning its foundations. Faces remain present, yet no longer function as isolated protagonists. Flowers, animals, interiors and still lifes increasingly assume equal psychological and formal presence, dissolving the conventional boundaries between pictorial genres.
Rather than expanding his repertoire of subjects, Boehm expands the conditions under which painting itself can generate meaning. Material, colour, gesture and textile coexist as active components within each composition, allowing painting to operate not simply as representation but as an autonomous pictorial reality. Humour, uncertainty, tenderness and contradiction remain in continuous negotiation, producing works that resist singular interpretation while maintaining a remarkable formal coherence.
The exhibition unfolds through this gradual expansion of language. Moving through the gallery, visitors encounter paintings in which familiar motifs continually shift their function and relationship to one another. Portraits become emotional structures, flowers acquire psychological weight, and domestic interiors emerge as spaces of imagination rather than description. What develops is not a sequence of subjects, but a painterly ecology in which material and perception continually transform one another. Rather than proposing a rupture with earlier work, Die schöne Jugend presents the maturation of a practice that has become increasingly open, generous and structurally nuanced.
With Die schöne Jugend, Buysse Gallery continues its programme of exhibitions dedicated to contemporary painting, foregrounding materiality, perception and the evolving possibilities of the medium.
