Buysse Gallery is pleased to present Latency, a duo exhibition bringing together photography by Lieven Lefere and sculpture, glass and light works by Stefan Nikolaev, on view at Zeedijk Het Zoute 700, Knokke, from 3 October to 29 November 2026. The exhibition considers latency as the interval between presence and appearance, a condition in which something exists before becoming fully visible or perceptible.
In Lieven Lefere’s photographic practice, perception is rarely immediate. Architecture, landscape, constructed situations and controlled conditions of light complicate photography’s presumed relationship with the visible world. The origin of what is represented is not always disclosed, allowing distinctions between observation and construction, physical space and representation to remain unsettled. The photograph becomes a surface through which perception is slowed rather than resolved.
Stefan Nikolaev approaches this instability through objects, signs and light. Familiar forms and visual codes are displaced from their habitual contexts, allowing their associations to shift. Glass and illumination introduce a further tension between material presence and image. Electricity remains invisible until converted into light, while the object moves between physical structure and luminous sign, recognition and uncertainty.
The encounter between Lefere and Nikolaev develops through these different forms of delayed recognition. Lefere works with what remains unresolved within an image; Nikolaev with what remains unresolved within an object. Rather than establishing direct correspondences between individual works, Latency allows relationships to emerge through distance, changes in light and the intervals separating one work from another. Photography introduces moments of visual stillness, while Nikolaev’s sculptural and illuminated works interrupt this rhythm through physical presence. Negative space becomes part of the exhibition’s structure, asking the viewer to encounter the works through duration and repeated observation.
Latency continues Buysse Gallery’s programme of examining perception, materiality and the shifting relationship between image, object and the space in which they are encountered.
